Dutch central bank attempts to prevent ABN Amro split: report

BRUSSELS, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The head of the Dutch central bank tried to win political support to block the splitting of the Netherlands' largest bank ABN Amro, Dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad reported Thursday.

Quoting unnamed sources, the newspaper said Nout Wellink, president of De Nederlandsche Bank, was fiercely opposed to the takeover mounted by a consortium led by the Royal Bank of Scotland(RBS), which eventually beat off ABN Amro's preferred partner Barclays of Great Britain.
