James Rutherford Williams, a former president of the Canterbury District Law Society and senior partner in a Christchurch law firm, has died at the age of 90.

James Williams was wounded three times during World War 2 and was decorated for gallantry at Cassino.

He was the son of James Hugh Williams, of Christchurch, and attended St Andrew's College from 1918-1926. On leaving St Andrews, James Williams worked at his father's law firm, Meares Williams Holmes and Booker, while studying law.

In 1933 he was awarded the Butterworth prize for law of contract, and he graduated LLB from Canterbury College in 1935. He was admitted to the bar in 1936 as a barrister and solicitor, and continued with ...
