Article: Alexandria Raises Lunch Prices at Schools; Board Hopes 33% Increase Cuts Food Service Department Losses

The Alexandria School Board, hoping to turn around increasing losses incurred in recent years by the system's food service, voted last night to raise the price of student lunches by as much as one third.

Even with the increase, the schools' food service would show a deficit of $146,000 for the coming school year, according to the administration's estimates.

On the recommendation of Chairman Judith S. Seltz, the board also agreed to notify the City Council that more money may be needed near the end of the school year to maintain the program.

The increase brings the price of elementary school lunches to $1.20, up from 90 cents. Secondary students will now pay $1.30, up from $1.
