The Canterbury food and transport industries will be the biggest benefactors from the increased cruise ship visits to Lyttelton this summer.

Christchurch and Canterbury Marketing said figures from a domestic travel study showed 23 per cent of cruise ship passenger's money went towards food, while 29% went towards transport.

In total, the Canterbury economy would receive more than $13 million in direct expenditure by cruise ship passengers this season.

Christchurch and Canterbury Marketing communications manager John McKenzie said many cruise ship companies were seeing New Zealand as a "safe" destination to visit.
