WELLINGTON -- A large number of women have sought advice from
family planning clinics around New Zealand after a blood-clot scare
surrounding two brands of oral contraceptive pill, and many have
switched brands.
The Health Ministry last month advised an estimated 25,000 women
taking third- generation Estelle 35/35ED or Diane 35/35ED to seek
medical advice, after a British study found they were more likely to
develop blood clots.
Family Planning Association national medical adviser Christine
Roke said a large number of women using the contraceptive pills had
contacted clinics, and while some had chosen to remain on the pills,
most had opted to change.
