Colourful and exotic, handmade carpets from the East are much more than just aesthetic.

Exotic rugs from Afghanistan and the East have fascinated Robert Cadry all his life. His father, now in his 90s, moved from Iran to Sydney in 1950, and this year the family business is celebrating its first half-century.

The business has supplied exotic rugs to department stores throughout Australia and New Zealand for the last 40 years, and last month Robert Cadry visited Christchurch to launch a new range of carpets at Ballantynes.

The rugs come from Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, and India, and Robert travels regularly. He speaks Farsi and Turkish.
