New Zealand asthma sufferers are inhaling more than double the
drugs they need.
Asthma Foundation medical director Ian Town said average daily
doses in New Zealand had increased as sufferers had switched to
Fluticasone (Flexitide).
Fluticasone is stronger than traditional asthma drugs.
Dr Town, who is the dean of the Christchurch School of Medicine
and Health Sciences, said the average daily dose of Fluticasone in
New Zealand was 650mcg a day but research showed users needed only
200mcg per day to get maximum effect.
"There is a tendency for New Zealand doctors to use higher doses,"
he said.
"It seems to be higher than in other countries."
