The Ministry of Health wants "social" Caesareans stamped out in
New Zealand and expects clinicians to refuse elective Caesareans
unless there is a medical reason for them.
Ministry national maternity manager Barbara Browne said clinicians
should make it clear that women cannot have Caesareans on demand to
fit in with their lifestyle.
She said clinicians who performed "social" Caesareans should be
made to explain their actions.
A legal opinion from the Auckland Crown Law Office has advised
doctors and District Health Boards (DHBs) not to perform elective
Caesareans unless there are medical reasons involved in the decision.
