A leading Colombian presidential candidate was assassinated last
night, apparently by drug traffickers, and the government in Bogota
today declared an all-out attack on the powerful cocaine trade.
The murder of Luis Carlos Galan, a prominent senator who had
campaigned against the drug kingpins, capped a bloody week in which
two other senior officials-the police chief of the province where the
Medellin drug cartel is headquartered, and a judge who had ruled
against two drug lords-also were gunned down by assassins suspected
of working for cartel members.
