The Lyttelton Port Company faces a fresh threat to its livelihood
with cruise ship agents warning the port could be bypassed if
restrictions on visits are not lifted.
The port, which is 65 per cent-owned by Christchurch ratepayers,
confirmed on Monday it had failed to win a big container ship
contract with P&O Nedlloyd/ANZ Alliance. The port has lost 20 per
cent of its container business in recent months, because of a long
running dispute with unions over introducing more flexible labour
practices.
Now a member of the cruise ship industry has fired a broadside at
port management over its policy of not accepting bookings for more
than one large cruise ship at a time.
