Arthur Ellis Ltd is giving up trying to compete with the overseas costs of manufacturing tents, back packs, and outdoor clothing.

About 105 jobs will go when manufacturing operations in Christchurch and Mosgiel are closed on December 20, said the new chief executive, Hugo Venter.

Up to 53 jobs in Christchurch will be lost, plus 45 fulltime and seven casual positions at Mosgiel in Dunedin. Mr Venter, who bought a 40 per cent stake in Arthur Ellis early last month, said the company lost $1 million on its manufacturing operations last year.

"This sort of thing is never easy but the writing has been on the wall. We can't keep subsidising that."
