St George's Hospital has asked the Canterbury District Health
Board (CDHB) to fund an extra 15 elective caesareans a year.
The private hospital in Merivale is contracted by the CDHB to
perform between 70 and 80 per cent of the region's elective
caesareans. It is budgeted to perform 365 elective caesareans a year
at an average cost of $3000 for each procedure, but wants funding for
380 a year.
The request comes at a time when the number of caesareans being
performed in New Zealand is being questioned by the Ministry of
Health.
Health groups believe up to 400 "social" caesareans (caesareans
performed without a medical reason) are done each year. Elective
