VIOLENCE FIGURES
Incidents of domestic violence reported to Canterbury police have
fluctuated in the Canterbury police district over recent years, from
4749 in 1999, 4765 in 2000, to 4484 in 2001. Up until July this year,
there have been 3211 reported incidents.

When Llew Summers feared he might kill his partner or children, he
knew he had to change.
The Christchurch sculptor, now 54, was stuck in a brutal cycle of
domestic violence for a large chunk of his life. His partners and
children were his victims, suffering black eyes and burst ear- drums.
"I never wanted to kill somebody, but I realised at a certain
point ... that's what's going to happen if you keep going down that
