Article: Arts Centre needs $9m in seismic strengthening work

Seismic strengthening work needs to be done on Christchurch's Arts Centre or its historic buildings could be lost in a major earthquake.

The Arts Centre, on Worcester Boulevard, forms the heart of Christchurch's cultural precinct and is one of New Zealand's most visited attractions.

Its historic buildings, though, are showing the signs of their age and need between $8 million and $9m spent on them to bring them up to Building Code standards.

The Arts Centre Trust hopes Christchurch's ratepayers will pick up at least some of that bill.
