Mother's Day is a very old celebration. Contrary to the suspicions
of some, it is not an invention of greeting-card companies, although
their products now feature high on the list of items bought for
Mother's Day.
The first Mother's Day celebrations were during the spring
celebrations of ancient Greece, and were in honour of Rhea, the
Mother of the Gods.
In Rome, the most significant Mother's Day-like festival was
dedicated to the worship of Cybele, another mother goddess.
Ceremonies in her honour began around 250 BC. This Roman celebration,
known as Hilaria, lasted for three days from March 15 to 18.
