The martial arts-with advertised health benefits such as
increased stamina, power, speed, flexibility and cardiovascular
efficiency-are being included in many fitness regimens as a means to
get in shape, control weight, relieve stress or defend oneself.
Oxon Hill's Lynnette Love, winner of a gold medal in taekwondo in
the 1988 Summer Olympics, began studying martial arts to stay in
shape. "The overall physical demand on your body is extensive," Love
said. "I'm a relatively large person, so I never looked at taekwondo
for its self- defense purposes. I just wanted to stay in shape after
college."
