Article: Panda Cub In Guarded Condition;Newborn's Survival Surprises Officials

The National Zoo's giant panda cub was in "guarded condition" yesterday and remained in the zoo's veterinarian hospital, where animal scientists-with an assist from Children's Hospital pediatricians-worked round-the-clock to keep the newborn cub alive.

The tiny female, born in the Panda House Friday morning, is suffering from a serious infection apparently contracted from the reproductive tract of its mother, Ling-Ling. The baby panda took a turn for the worse Friday evening, seemed to be in respiratory distress at one point and was not expected to live through the night.
