A tight inner-city site posed no problems for architect Thom
Craig, whose solution was a long, tall, narrow house. Inner-city
Christchurch appealed to Brian and Trish Le Vaillant, with
restaurants, art galleries, cinemas, the Christchurch Town Hall, and
Christ's College, where Brian teaches,
all within easy walking distance.
When a section in Chester Street West became available, it seemed
ideal, even though it was a narrow space, just over 10m wide.
Architect Thom Craig was undaunted by the challenge, says Brian.
"He was building his black box (a controversial, tall house in
Fendalton), and said, `If you don't believe what you can put on a
section, come and see my house'."
