Senior White House officials have told Fred Bush, the president's
onetime nominee to be ambassador to Luxembourg, that he faces fierce
opposition in the Senate, but Bush has not formally asked the White
House to withdraw his name from consideration for the post.
In what appears to be an escalating series of signals to Bush
that his renomination is untenable, White House Personnel Director
Chase Untermeyer yesterday said that he had met with the former aide
and fund-raiser for the president to brief him on a session last week
with Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Claiborne Pell
(D-R.I).
Untermeyer called the session with Pell "polite" and did not
dispute a Senate source who said ...
