Now, thanks to three unknown rookie pitchers in Minnesota, both
sides of the Toronto Blue Jays' split personality are on full view
once more. Because of David West, Kevin Tapani and Mark Guthrie, the
American League East pennant race is finally as exciting as it ought
to be.
Suddenly nobody is talking about the inevitability of the mighty
Blue Jays rolling past the meek Orioles. After just three losses in
the Metrodome, few mention how nobly the Blue Jays played for six
weeks, going from 10 games behind to 2 1/2 games ahead of Baltimore.
"We stunk," third baseman Kelly Gruber reportedly said after the
