New Zealand's prison population is predicted to soar 20 per cent
in the next 10 years.
Justice Minister Phil Goff has revealed in Parliament that a
Ministry of Justice report, due to be released next week, forecasts a
20 per cent increase in prison inmates by 2013.
Most growth in prison numbers will be in the North Island. Four
new prisons will be built in Otago, Northland and Auckland to cope
with the increase.
Corrections Minister Paul Swain said tougher sentences and changes
to the Bail Act meant more people were being sent to prison.
