Family Law affects New Zealanders' private lives in a way no other
body of law matches, believes University of Canterbury Family Law
lecturer, John Caldwell.
"Disputes in the Family Law arena are the most important an
individual can face. For this reason the Chief Justice, Dame Sian
Elias, believes that Family Law should be regarded as the apex of the
legal system."
A popular perception of Family Law is that it relates only to
property settlements and associated custody disputes following a
marriage breakup. However, in reality, Family Law includes almost
every aspect of a person's life, from the cradle to the grave.
