The White House asked the Senate yesterday to postpone action on
its nominee to be ambassador to Venezuela, Eric M. Javits, because
the New York lawyer has been subpoenaed in connection with a
Securities and Exchange Commission investigation, sources said
yesterday.
Javits, nephew of the late senator Jacob Javits (R-N.Y.), was
scheduled to have his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee on Friday.
Senate officials said the White House made the request for the
delay yesterday, saying it needed time to gather more information on
Javits.
Administration and Senate sources said no problems had been
uncovered in the background check on Javits, a major donor to the ...
