Conjoined, or Siamese, twins have always inspired fascination and sympathy.

The successful separation of conjoined twins at Waikato Hospital yesterday thrilled parents and doctors and put the plight of conjoined twins once again in sharp relief.

Separating conjoined twins is rarely without risk and some conjoined twins do not survive their operation.

Such was the fate of Iranian sisters Ladan and Laleh Bijani last year.

Despite the odds, the women agreed to unprecedented and risky separation surgery because they could no longer bear living a shared
