If the democratic opposition in Nicaragua mounts a successful
voter registration drive this month and the election is fair, it will
defeat President Daniel Ortega and his Marxist-led Sandinista Party
in February's national elections, a senior official in the government
of Costa Rican President Oscar Arias said today.
The official, who asked not to be identified but who reflected
the thinking of the Arias government, warned that the United States
could lead many anti-Sandinista Nicaraguans to support Ortega if it
keeps trying to aid the campaign of opposition presidential candidate
Violeta Chamorro.
By so doing, the official said, Washington is giving the
