Article: Gambling addiction proves costly

A gambling addiction has cost a Christchurch businessman his career, his family home and his clean record, and could still cost him his liberty.

Wayne Joseph Newsome, 47, pleaded guilty in the Christchurch District Court this week to 32 fraud charges totalling more than $250,000 for the false-invoice scam he initiated to fund his gambling habit.

Judge Edward Ryan convicted Newsome on the charges and remanded him on bail for sentence in June so he could organise to repay the money he embezzled, but warned that jail could still follow.
