Christchurch Hospital's overcrowded emergency department is facing added pressure from hundreds of waiting-list patients seeking urgent attention for their conditions.

Even though many of the waiting- list patients are deemed by the emergency department (ED) to be sick enough to need immediate admission to hospital, they still do not get the operation they need, a new research project has found.

Instead, they are stabilised and sent home to wait longer, risking a return to hospital in an even worse condition.

The report has been seized on by those who argue that the waiting list system is backfiring by denying timely surgery to the sick.
