BNZ is pitching for small business customers with cheaper fees, after falling behind in the market share stakes.

BNZ led the two-year fixed interest rate war late last year and hopes this new challenge to other banks will paint it as a market leader and have wider spin-offs than just gaining customers from the small business market.

Yesterday it announced a drop in transaction charges and competitive interest rates for small business customers. Small businesses have been the cinderellas of banking, not big earners for the banks because many of them do not borrow much money and use the banks mainly for transactions such as deposits and withdrawals as part of managing their funds.
