Tourists gather in huddles around their guides and gawp at the scale of Tiananmen Square.

From Chairman Mao's Memorial Hall to the huge red walls of the Forbidden City daubed in paintings of China's most infamous leader, the vast open space is steeped in often bloody history.

It is cloaked in Beijing smog so thick one can see for only two city blocks.
