Surprise findings reveal coffee may reduce the risk of contracting diabetes.

But don't dive for the espresso machine just yet.

The Dutch researchers said longer-term studies were needed to prove that coffee did indeed cause lower rates of type 2 diabetes.

In a review of nine recent investigations, the researchers found heavy coffee drinkers had a substantially lower risk of having type 2 diabetes.

The report, published in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, showed the link was strongest for percolated coffee, which has also been associated with a higher risk of heart disease.
