Men are frustrated by them and businesses no longer demand them, so are we witnessing the demise of the tie?

Mike Pero, Christchurch identity and successful businessman, thinks so.

"I don't wear ties as often now as I did a year or two ago. I had been quite traditional, quite old school, but I'm changing rapidly," he said.

"I feel a lot better not wearing one actually; a lot more relaxed. I think there is a definite trend away from wearing ties. They are conceived as kind of geeky these days. You can still feel confident as a businessperson and not wear a tie."
