A Christchurch air-conditioning specialist says a properly
maintained cooling tower should not be infected with legionella and
those returning positive tests should be publicly named.
The Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) revealed last week
that four towers had tested positive for legionella, but it has
refused to name them.
Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Mel Brieseman said last week
that it was not known if the towers carried the strain of
legionnaires' disease involved in the outbreak, which has claimed
three lives and infected 17 other people.
He did not know if the level of legionella was enough to cause a
disease outbreak.
