West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl called on East Germany today
to adopt democratic changes leading to free elections, and said that
his country would use economic and other aid to support reforms in
Poland and Hungary as a way to pressure East Germany to follow their
example.
In his first major address on events in East Germany since Egon
Krenz took over as the nation's new leader on Wednesday, Kohl
signaled that West Germany would refrain from helping Krenz unless he
introduced significant reforms similar to those under way elsewhere
in Eastern Europe.
