Article: Kathmandu fined for 'sales'

The Commerce Commission hopes its long-term chase and eventual prosecution of clothing outlet Kathmandu over its sale advertising will send a sharp warning to other retailers.

The Christchurch business, with stores throughout New Zealand and Australia and in London, has apologised unreservedly to customers after being fined $28,000, plus costs, in the Auckland District Court yesterday.

Kathmandu pleaded guilty to seven breaches of the Fair Trading Act after it advertised goods as being on sale when they had been available at the discounted price for months before the sale. In some cases, they were also available at the same sale price afterwards.
