PGG Wrightson is footing the $400,000 bill to farmers owed money by Oamaru's Abco Meats, which has gone into receivership.

Abco, which employs about 100 staff in Oamaru, was placed in receivership last month after hitting financial strife.

While the receivers continue to work through the books, PGG Wrightson has stepped in to pay farmers who sent stock to the plant for processing when PGG Wrightson was acting as agent.
