Article: Study: gay couples face criticism for civil unions

Gay couples entering into civil unions can face criticism from friends for selling out to heterosexual norms, new research says.

Researchers from Manchester University in Britain say while civil unions provide huge positives for gay couples, there are some problems.

New Zealand and Britain have introduced civil unions in the past 18 months.

The problems include facing up to friends who believe a civil union is "selling out" to heterosexual norms, otherwise known as "heteronormativity".

Other problems can also occur in getting friends and family to mix at ceremonies.
