Article: 'Leave Hagley Park alone'

Develop the Botanic Gardens but leave Hagley Park alone -- that is the early indication from submissions received by the Christchurch City Council on its proposed development of the two attractions.

The council has received 600 submissions from sports clubs, heritage groups, the Department of Conservation and residents.

Parks and waterways planner Derek Roozen said the council had put a few proposals in its mailout submission forms to "titillate and provoke response".

A suggestion to fence the cricket oval in South Hagley Park drew a strong "no".

J. and H. Clough, of Hoon Hay, said there should be no new structures in the park.
