The Government is considering a 147,000ha heritage park.
The Kawatiri Heritage Park would extend 80km north of the Buller
River, near Westport, to the Little Wanganui River, east to Kahurangi
National Park along the Main Divide, and west to State Highway 61.
The Department of Conservation says commercial interests, such as
mining rights, will not be affected by the park.
Submissions on the proposal close on March 2.
The West Coast Conservancy said a heritage park would highlight
Buller as an area of historical, natural and recreational importance,
