Beans are a popular vegetable choice for gardeners. Unlike some
vegetables that often need to be nursed, the bean is independent.
With varieties that can be planted in winter to fill the early
spring "hungry gap", to ones that are long, purple, yellow, stringy
or stringless, the bean not only provides a great meal, the plant
also does double duty fixing nitrogen in the soil. It's a no wonder
the bean is such a popular choice for the home gardener.
Bean history
Beans are legumes, belonging to the Fabaceae family, and have been
cultivated for thousands of years. The long pod-like beans are native
to Europe, while snap beans are native to the Americas.
