First there was some grainy news footage of President Kennedy
shouting "Ich bin ein Berliner." Then television viewers were
treated to scenes of jubilant East Germans surging into West Berlin
through what one Soviet commentator described as "a relic of the Cold
War."
Events of the past few days, culminating in what has been
described here as "the virtual destruction of the Berlin Wall," have
been as dizzying to Soviets as they have to Westerners. They have
also raised fundamental questions about whether the Kremlin can still
control the runaway process of political and economic reform in
Eastern Europe.
