The moral authority for groups like the Sensible Sentencing Trust
comes from the notion that most people are law-abiding citizens who
just want "the crims" to go away.
In order to uphold this position, however, the moral majority must
be pretty much squeaky-clean in their dealings with the world. If
not, they run the risk of being found out as hypocrites, and there's
nothing New Zealanders hate more than that.
It is one of the reasons why our "Christian" politicians get into
such strife, I think. Too many of them get very preachy about
morality and the importance of the family and so on, and next thing
you know they are accused of adultery or worse. Sometimes, much
worse.
