Fame may take VC winner away from SAS duties

Winning the Victoria Cross (VC) could end the clandestine military career of New Zealand's newest war hero but not for the reasons you might think, experts say.

Corporal Willy Apiata's cover has been blown with the announcement this week that he is to be awarded the Commonwealth's highest award for bravery, the first Kiwi to receive the honour since World War 2.

But public exposure will not do as much damage to his chances of returning to active duty with the Special Air Service (SAS) fighting the war on terror as the weighty public schedule he will have to attend to as a national icon.
