Potentially life-threatening food allergies are on the rise,
particularly among children, yet there is no paediatric specialist
care in the South Island.
Most food allergy sufferers are children, but the country's only
child allergy specialists are in Auckland.
One of them, Auckland Hospital's Associate Professor Rohan
Ameratunga, said a quarter of his patients came from outside
Auckland, many of them from Christchurch and other parts of the South
Island.
They flew to Auckland for treatment, he said, because there were
no specialist services in the south.
"And obviously, we're only seeing the tip of the iceberg -- the
ones who can afford it," he said.
