Article: Anger over closure of visitor centre

A fight is brewing over Department of Conservation (DOC) plans to close the Glenorchy visitor centre because it is not selling enough merchandise.

Protests from residents and business owners could all be in vain because the department is adamant its decision will not be overturned. The closure was flagged in a report in the mid-1990s, but no final decision had been made public until now. Only last year most Otago Conservation Board members had opposed the closure.

Otago conservator Jeff Connell confirmed to The Press that Wakatipu area manager Greg Lind had made the decision to close the centre.
