West Melton trainer Mike Austin talks to DAVID McCARTHY about
winners and losers and the battle to make racing pay.
Mike Austin has never won a premiership or a even a classic race.
However he is typical of the middle tier of harness trainers,
carving a living out of preparing, racing and selling horses like
hundreds of others without big- spending owners. With one difference
though. Last season his West Melton stable turned out 162 starters --
all trotters. Starting at the beginning did you have a family
interest in racing?
No, after leaving school I went working on farms and ended up with
Trevor Moore near Styx. I was there a few years. He had a few horses
