FONTANA - Ben Spies envisioned his first AMA Superbike Series win
would be a race to the finish, perhaps with Yoshimura Suzuki teammate
Mat Mladin.
Instead, the series rookie took the Suzuki Dealers 100K on
Saturday at California Speedway, seconds after his windscreen
cracked. Any worries on whether his motorcycle would quit before the
finish line was moot. He led only one lap - the most important one.
As it turned out, the Texan had just enough to edge teammate Aaron
Yates by 0.66 seconds in front of an estimated crowd of 15,000. Spies
averaged 63.9 mph in the race that took a little more than an hour to
complete thanks to a pair of restarts.
