Chronic diseases affect American Indians just as much as blacks
and Latinos. But, because many tribes operate their own health-care
programs, interaction with federal, state and local health agencies
is rare.
As a result, federal programs designed to address health-care
disparities among minority groups often don't include American
Indians.
Through its new Tribal Consultation Policy, the federal Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention is now required to do just that.
"We're basically talking about programs that are going to impact
and help address ongoing health disparities they are facing with the
