The definition of a county is: "A division of local government in the United States, Great Britain and many Commonwealth countries." In the United States, a county is generally described as a local level of government that is smaller than a state but (usually) larger than a city or town.

The term "county' is used in 48 states. Louisiana uses the term "parish" and Alaska uses the term "borough." Texas has the most counties, with 254, and Delaware has the fewest with three.
