Drug-related violence is sending so many uninsured patients to
the Washington Hospital Center's MedStar trauma unit that hospital
officials say they "will seriously consider" closing it unless the
District government takes steps to ease the hospital's growing
financial loss.
The warning reflects rising anxiety at some city hospitals over
the burden of treating uninsured patients of all kinds, and comes as
the D.C. Council is considering two bills that would provide health
insurance to the more than 100,000 District residents who reportedly
do not have it.
MedStar, one of the city's busiest trauma units, dispensed $22
million in uncompensated medical care in the fiscal year ending June
