Not serving the people

Recently it was reported that contributions from local citizens to the families of firefighters who lost their lives in the Esperanza Fire might be subject to a tax. If the tax had been imposed, the IRS would have effectively reduced the amount of contributions that otherwise would be used to defray the expenses of families who lost a loved one.

The attempt by the IRS, coupled with the failure of governmental representatives to strongly object to the inequity of this tax being levied, is reprehensible. The only voice that appeared to contest the IRS position is Riverside County Supervisor Marion Ashley.
